Which Are You? The Tortoise or the Hare?

Pondering my place in the “race”

Very soon it will have been a year since I found Medium and started writing here. At first, I was here to read. I followed the writer, Roxane Gay, through a rabbit hole and landed feet first someplace I’d never even imagined.

I think it was only a week between finding Medium and giving up my first $5.00 for a monthly membership. Shortly after that, I found out I could make money by sharing my own stories behind the paywall and I was then regularly writing again.

Writing is my true creative bent.

I’ve spent almost my entire adult life involved in being creative and most of that time getting paid for what I do. Before I figured out how to do so, I had a few ill-fated attempts at getting paid for creative work.

I have a degree in fine art and right after college I worked in my garage studio every night after I got home making etchings with a small intaglio press. I submitted my original prints to art shows I heard about by word of mouth, the newspaper and those advertised in the backs of art magazines I purchased off of the newsstand. Needless to say, this was before the internet. Other than one piece in a single show in Houston that I sold for 150.00, I never gained any traction with my printmaking.
