I feel nostalgic for the way things were for me when I was a kid and I try not to forget that at the same time all of those memories were being made, others struggled.
I get what you are saying about the level playing field but I I don’t want to disregard (ignore? overlook? dismiss?) the dark vein of racism that ran through everything.

Sometimes people just fall through the cracks. People without any sort of net to catch them.
My parents tried to keep life as sanitary as possible. What they failed to take into consideration was that life is grimy. That fuels my writing.
