Robin, I had to think about why this story so resonates with me. And then I figured it out.

My husband didn't ask why he couldn't have what he wanted. He asked if we could go to Hawaii. He'd never wanted to go to Hawaii in all of our years together but as his end grew near, the idea of laying on a beach in the hot sun with waves making a soothing sound in the background was equal to your husband's just wanting what he wanted.

No carrots same as Hawaii. We never got there. We

d already run through any and all extra money.

All I could offer him was an adirondack chair in the Hill Country sun on our patio.
