My old fart self wants everyone who is nervous about the idea of Medium changing to know…nothing in life ever stays the same. If Medium changes to a place where the writers can’t make money anymore the writers who are here to make money or need to make money will soon have someplace else to go. Someone else will make something new.

I have a hard time believing that Medium is up to something that could be such an antithesis to what they have created. I’m not an expert but from what i’ve read I see some real sincerity.

I read a great article from NYT about Mark Bittman and one of the new Medium publications called Salty.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/19/business/media/mark-bittman-medium-food-magazine.html

Read it for yourself. What I got from it is that some of the dollars that could go to advertising but were not because “no advertising” is a promise made by Ev Williams, were going to starting up new publications. That sounds like something that could bring more readers to Medium. I would imagine there is an ebb and flow to writers joining the MPP and readers joining as members and if that gets out of balance there are less dollars to spread around.

The NYT article gave me enough info to find a link for people to pitch their articles to Salty. There is an email address. Easy peasy. If I could find it, anyone can find it.

I am not the best informed person around here. I found the NYT article while trying to find a publication that features articles about food because I wrote a humor piece about cupcakes. Yes, cupcakes.

Before any of this came to light I noticed a story about the “in crowd” that Darcy talks about here. And I was thinking- Jeez- what if you have a perception that you are in with this guy and he doesn’t include your name in his story. That would be like that mean little girl with the big hair bow who’s parents build a little play house behind her house and she walks around the neighborhood inviting some people to play and not others- right in front of the outcasts.

Even an 8 year old knows that’s all kind of effed up. So, the writer/publisher we are speaking of here was on my radar. When this shook loose it wasn’t hard to figure out who it was and I am sorry Shannon had to go through even a minute of wondering WTF was going on. I’m sorry she had to open that email and read it. Uncool.

Since I’m an old fart I’ve seen this kind of thing before in other places.

Darcy, you are a good friend to take up for Shannon and shed some light. What Shannon has shown me is grace. And friendship. And her talent and her her work ethic.

As for the other guy, hubris can really be a stubborn bitch to shake out of your system. First you have to acknowledge it. At least that’s what Dr. Phil says.

And I hope he feels better soon.
