My first thought after reading Mr. Sedaris's response was, "He doesn't seem very nice."

I was raised in the south and taught to say thank you to compliments. I did the tiniest but of research and learned he's from New York. Bless his heart, that does allow room for forgiveness.

I'm also a Sedaris fan. Your letter opened the door for his critique even though you didn't ring the bell.
