My first husband’s father used to take the family out for dinner so that he could treat his son to a specific meal ( raw oysters). When the waiter approached with menus he’d wave them off…Nope, we’re just having oysters. Problem was his wife and I didn’t want raw oysters. A few times we both just sat and watched them eat. The old man really enjoyed taking his son out for oysters!
The last time my f-i-l did this I suggested to my m-i-law that we let them go alone and that we go and get a bite to eat too. I took her to the same restaurant. We got seated just a few tables away from my husband and his Dad. When the waiter brought out our cocktails my f-i-l finally saw us sitting there. We toasted him!
The restaurant made really great gumbo. I love good gumbo.
F-i-l never did this again. My husband gave me kudos when we were back together at his Dad’s house. M-i-l loved me more.
Win, win, and a bowl of gumbo.
