As the exemplary American suburbanite, I've never even seen a piece of coal in person.

There is a bad habit here of refurbishing (rehabbing) old houses into cookie-cutter boringness, completely stripped of charm. I can't imagine the tantrum an American realtor would throw confronted with a house with a coal burning boiler.
