I once was the weekend manager of a small business. One of the employees had really bad body odor. I always sent him home to bathe and change into clean clothes when I was in charge. The first time I did it, everyone who worked there gave me a standing ovation.
The guy never took heed. By Monday the stink would be back, full force and the regular manager didn't give enough of a shit to what I did. Hey, I just didn't want to smell him all day and I knew it was a turn off for the customers who had to deal with him.
I would have told your date. Frankly, I don't think I would have ever gotten in the car with him. I have a very sensitive sense of smell. And I'm really clear on what disgusts me to the point of not wanting to be around it.
If you told him, he could either choose to do something about it or not. Probably not. It's a basic level of self-awareness. Something is WRONG if a person doesn't already know the rules of hygiene by the time they are an adult.
I guess you need to decide if you want to help the guy or just get away from him. I think it's a lot nicer to tell him.
